MEET BEN HUESO
Experienced Leadership Delivering Results for the South Bay for More Than a Decade
Ben Hueso has served as California State Senator representing the 40th District since March 2013.
As senator, Hueso currently represents the cities of Chula Vista, National City and Imperial Beach; portions of the City of San Diego, including the neighborhoods of Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa; as well as all of Imperial County.
Hueso serves as Chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications. In this role, he presides over hearings and considers bills related to alternative energy development and conservation, utilities and energy companies, and communications development and technology.
Hueso also chairs the Senate Select Committee on California-Mexico Cooperation, which is tasked with studying and making legislative recommendations relating to infrastructure, economic development, social and civic exchanges of mutual benefit, and border-related matters between California and Mexico.
In addition, Hueso sits on the State Senate Committees of Banking and Financial Institutions, Insurance, Natural Resources and Water, and Governmental Organization. He is a member of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, serving as Chair in 2017 and 2018, and Vice Chair in 2015 and 2016.
Prior to being elected to the State Senate, Hueso represented the 79th Assembly District from 2010-2012 and the 80th Assembly District from 2012-2013 due to redistricting. Hueso was first elected to public office in 2005 as San Diego City Councilmember representing District 8. During his tenure at City Hall, Hueso was elected Council President and was the first Latino to serve in that position. He was also appointed as a Commissioner for the California Coastal Commission, where he worked to defend and preserve California’s precious coastlines.
Throughout Hueso’s entire career in public service, he has been a champion of policies protecting consumers, advancing workers’ rights, and providing assistance to underserved and at-risk communities. He is also a staunch advocate for quality education, safe and clean water, environmental stewardship, clean energy, small businesses and stable and affordable housing.
Hueso holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University California Los Angeles, studied at the University of Odessa in the Ukraine, and completed post-graduate work in Community and Economic Development at San Diego State University. He was born and raised in San Diego where he’s been elected seven times, most recently in 2018 with 67% of the vote of his constituency. He lives in Logan Heights with his four sons.
